Landscaping in Fairlight

This was a large featureless garden on a hill and the aim was to make the top half level so that there was more usable space for our clients and their children to enjoy. They also didn’t want us to use any steps because of their toddler.

The lower half of the garden was left as a gentle slope where we built a raised vegetable garden.  The final aspect of this design was the shed area and the path leading down to it.

This was a 6-week project for us and we think the finished garden looks great.  More importantly the clients are delighted with it too, which makes us even happier.

The Levels

A pleasant but rather unimaginative and boggy garden.

Excavating the garden and bringing in tons of topsoil to make the top level flat…

… and installing drainage to get rid of the boggy lawn.

The 2 levels have been created and the retaining walls separating them built from new soft wood sleepers and lined with waterproof membrane.

The view from above showing the retaining walls that double up as raised beds.  The drop between the 2 levels is more apparent here which is why our clients wanted the beds raised above ground level to act as a barrier for their toddler and keep her safe.

Turfed and planted up and the garden is really coming together.

Our clients had very clear ideas about the plants they wanted to use which was great, and then we also added a little of our own style into the mix too.

The Shed

At the side of the garden was a path leading down to the shed and the whole area had become neglected and overgrown.

So we cleared it all, re-gravelled the path and made steps leading down to the shed as well as new beds and a new post and rail fence.

The shed and its new steps and path with the top level of the garden in the background.

All planted up and looking gorgeous!

The Veggie Patch

We excavated an area of the lower garden to make it level and then built retaining walls and raised beds.
