Levels and Landscaping in Hassocks

Our clients’ wish list included vegetable beds, somewhere to put a table and a play area for the children. However, their garden is on a steep slope and so they weren’t sure how they could achieve this. They also liked the wood retaining walls we had used on previous projects.

The Story

We suggested building stepped levels which not only overcame the problem of the slope but also created distinct areas, each of which would be used for a different function. We used these initial ideas and during the course of numerous discussions we came up with the final design.

Before work began...

  • Work well underway.

Many loads of rubbish were cleared from the garden before we could start work. We then set up the levels and the framework for each area, and dug out the path.

  • The circular patio beginning to take shape.

The clients chose a circular patio which helped to soften the scheme.

  • The view of the finished levels looking down the garden.

We used different materials for each of the levels to add interest and for functional reasons as well - the bark made for a softer landing under the climbing frame!

  • The path.

The path was extended to join the house to the new garden and we also built 2 new raised beds using wood retaining walls along the base of the deck, to continue the theme.

  • Looking up the garden towards the house.

After the clearance, but before the framework for the levels had been built.

  • The finished levels.

This shows the levels of the completed project really clearly.  Time and plants will soften the scheme, and let it blend in with the rest of the garden.  The closest level is the vegetable bed - we didn’t leave it unfinished!

What lovely Brassicas!

This was taken a month after completion, and the owners had added their own personal touches.

The same clients  also wanted their front garden tidied.  It had become overgrown and was overshadowed by Lleylandii, and so we took them down, and then cut back the shrubs, which immediately made the space feel larger.

Installing a new 5 bar gate, re-turfing the lawn, and replanting the beds completed the transformation.

The garden was now a welcoming entrance to our clients’ home.

  • Before...

  • And after!

““We were impressed from the first consultation to the final strip of turf. Rob was thoroughly accommodating and worked with us throughout the project to get the garden we wanted. We were amazed at how hard he and Ally worked and the end result is a wonderful, usable space for us to enjoy as a family.”
