Landscaping in Saltdean

The garden wraps around the house on 3 sides and our client asked us to landscape the front areas. The main aim was to make the garden more private which was a fairly straightforward task. We used raised beds for additional height and more mature shrubs and together they gave a great sense of privacy.

The Story

The more tricky part of the design was to make the 3 distinct areas flow together and give the garden cohesion, but we managed to do just that. It is impossible to show the garden as a whole so instead here are the before, during and after photos for each of the areas.

The Party Zone

The first was for entertaining and so we built a deck surrounded by the raised planters and shaped to best use all the space available.

The finished deck…

…and the steps leading down from it to the lawn which in turn led to a place of deep reflection

A Sunny Private Patio

Well, some may use this area for reflection, but it is also just a lovely sunny spot to sit and have a cuppa!

We built our signature curved timber wall around the circular patio to create a private and almost secret part of the garden.  As with the rest of the garden we used plants that thrive in salty, windy coastal conditions, and the use of the stones and decorative gravel gave it a coastal feel.

R & R

This led on to a small area part of which was decked, the idea being to put up a hammock here for chilling out on those summer days.  You can see the curved wall in the background.

The Front Door

Last but not least, the front door.  We made a decked step and raised planters to continue the theme of the rest of the garden and added a lovely piece of driftwood that we found at a local craft fair.
